EOD vs Intraday vs Static Drawdown Explained
The most important concept in futures prop — explained with real examples and firm comparisons.
When you're funded by a prop firm, the firm protects its capital with a drawdown floor — a minimum balance below which your account is terminated. What varies between firms is how that floor behaves as your balance changes. With a trailing drawdown, the floor rises as your balance rises. The floor never moves back down — it only ever goes up. This is the mechanism that makes a prop funded account inherently finite: at some point the floor and your current balance occupy the same neighbourhood, and one bad trade ends the account.
The floor updates once per day, at the session close. If your balance is $52,000 at 4pm CT and your floor was $48,000, tomorrow's floor becomes $50,000. If you then dip to $50,500 intraday the next day but recover to close at $52,500, your floor doesn't move until the close — the intraday low never affected it.
Key advantage: intraday swings that recover by the close are forgiven.
Key limitation: the floor still rises daily, and you can still end the account intraday if the move is large enough.
Firms using EOD: Apex (default), MFFU Core/Pro/Flex/Builder, Tradeify, TPT (evaluation), TradeDay FastPass, Lucid (all plans), Topstep XFA (funded stage).
The floor updates continuously, tracking your highest intraday balance in real time. If your account hits $53,000 at 10am, the floor immediately moves to $51,000. If you give back $2,000 by noon and sit at $51,001, you're $1 from termination — even though you're still up $1,000 since yesterday's close.
Key challenge: profitable mornings that give back gains can terminate accounts despite net positive performance over any multi-day window.
Firms using intraday: MFFU Rapid, TPT PRO (funded stage), TradeDay QuickPay (evaluation), Bulenox Option 1. Note: Topstep's MLL is set at end of day — not intraday.
The floor is set at the start and never moves — it doesn't trail at all. If you start with $50,000 and a $3,000 static drawdown, your floor is $47,000 forever. Build your balance to $60,000 and the floor is still $47,000. That $13,000 buffer is entirely yours to work with.
Key advantage: profitable trading builds a buffer that compounds without any mechanism clawing it back. The better you trade, the safer the account, with no ceiling on that safety.
TradeDay is the confirmed firm offering static drawdown as a standard, advertised funded account option. Check official sites for any other firms that may offer a static option — this can change.
For most traders, EOD trailing is the right default: it's forgiving enough that recoverable intraday moves don't end accounts, and the majority of reputable firms offer it.
Choose intraday trailing (or accept it where it's mandatory) if your strategy is genuinely tight and consistent — scalpers, well-defined automated systems, or traders who rarely take trades that go meaningfully against them before working.
Choose static if you want maximum predictability: every dollar of profit permanently expands your safety margin with no mechanic to reverse it. Best suited to traders who build position size as the account grows. TradeDay is the confirmed option for static drawdown on funded accounts.
